Roald Dahl - 100 Years

The Brief
This year marks 100 hundred years since Roald Dahl was born. Yet Roald Dahl’s stories are more popular than ever. We want him to stay that way.
The task is to re-illustrate your favourite Roald Dahl children’s story. The illustrations should appear as if they are part of a published series.
The target audience for Roald Dahl’s stories are boys and girls of the future, aged between 5 and 11. They don’t necessarily identify themselves as fans of Roald Dahl – yet!

The Response
We decided to illustrate three ideas for a book cover of Roald Dahl’s most popular film, Matilda, because this would have the most reach when it comes to children who are not actively looking to read books, but may recognise resemblances to the films.
Each cover is hand drawn and painted in watercolour, like the original illustrations by Quentin Blake, but are styled more similarly to cartoons, as this modernises the images that are aimed at a generation who are accustomed to seeing animations with accurate representations of perspectives and human forms, unlike the sketchy style of Quentin Blake.
Each cover is based on a still image from the Matilda film and features Roald Dahl’s logo. This design allows the traditional side of Roald Dahl to be honoured for his 100th anniversary, but also to be tweaked to appeal to the target audience.
